Conclusion Part 2

The non-organic strawberry also got

mold quicker than the organic strawberry. Also the non-organic had a faster decay rate and a stronger smell than the organic strawberry.

So we can conclude that the non-organic strawberry molded/decayed faster than the organic one.

*Neither does this

Conclusion

Our hypothesis was incorrect. We hypothesized that; After one week the organic strawberry will mold/decay faster than the non-organic strawberry. But the non-organic strawberry ended up with more mold.

  • Mold begins to grow in the beginning stages of decomposition
  • Mold prevents other micro-organisms from growing on the same surface
  • Decay of fruit changes the surface of the fruit and the enternal volume

Data Analysis

Background Research

"Decaying Strawberry Photographic Print by Rune Thorstein at AllPosters.com." Allposters.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Apr. 2014

  • Mold creates colonies on strawberries
  • Mold is usually white, black, green or yellow
  • Mold makes chemicals to break down oragnic matter
  • It creates toxins

  • We collected quantitative data.
  • The smell and decay were measured on a scale of 0-10. Zero being no smell and ten being the strongest smell.
  • And decay was zero being no decay and 10 being almost gone.
  • We measured mold with a cm ruler

Big Question

What will be the difference in the amount of mold on organic vs. non-organic strawberries after one week?

Organic

vs Non-organic

strawberries and mold

  • Rotting fruit changes color which is a result of attacking enzymes.
  • Mold uses fruit as food
  • Mold reproduces very quickly

Background Research

  • Mold grows more in higher temperatures
  • When fruit decays new chemical componds are produced.
  • Different species of fungi cause rotting in fruit
  • The process of fruit decay starts with ripening...
  • Mold grows from spores.
  • Fungus & Bacteria grow on skin.
  • Affected by moiture & temperature.
  • For each 10 degree celcius rise in temperature the activity of micro- organisms increases by at least 2 times
  • Once mold is visible on top of fruit, threads of mold have already spreed deep inside.
  • Microscopic fungi come together to form branches of mold.
  • Mold is composed of many cells
  • Mold makes its energy from dead organisms

  • Orangic stawberries use natural pesticides; such as compost or manure.
  • Ancient Greeks thought strawberries helped with headaches, cancer and heart attacks.
  • Strawberries require low fertilizer usage
  • The presence of living organisms and over exposure of oxygen can cause decay.
  • Without proper maintenance and watering the strawberries will perish.

Background Research

Background research

We learned alot from our research. We learned that just because a fruit has preservatives doesn't mean it will last longer than a fruit that is organic. We also learned that mold grows faster on softer fruit and there are actually stages of decay. And our experiment helped prove that mold grows faster when and there is more mold when the fruit is placed in a dark, warm place with moisture. Also we learned that the strawberries started to mold before they strared to decay. But they started to smell bad before they started to mold. There is lengthy process for a fruit to go through before it totally decays.

  • Different species of fungi can cause the fruit to rot.
  • Ripening of fruit is somewhat similar to changes of fruit rotting
  • Fruits produce ethylene

  • To be organic, the food must be approved by the USDA (the United States Department of Agriculture)
  • Organic food is better for the environment.
  • Mold grows more easily on soft fruits and vegetables.
  • Organic strawberries tend to have more water than non-organic strawberries

Big Question

  • Placed one organic and one non-organic strawberry in two different glass jars
  • We put them in a dark, warm place.
  • Meaused mold.
  • Rated the decay on a scale of 1-10.
  • Did this every morning for one week 6:30am and 6:30pm.
