MAMA'S GOING TO BUY YOU A MOCKINGBIRD

In the beginning of the book, Adrian, Jeremy and Sarah's father got diagnosed with a disease, bringing Melly to the hospital in Michigan to keep him company. The children stayed with their Aunt Margery in the cottage.

In the time that Adrian was home from the hospital, Jeremy was noticing that his health was improving, but was off to the hospital again bringing the Talbot's summer to an end. Adrian bought Jeremy a stone owl which he named "Hoot" and Sarah candy, to give them something to remember him by. One day, one of their neighbors came by and asked them if they wanted free kittens, to Jeremy's surprise, his father got him one, that he now calls "Blue".

Everything was perfect with the exception of his father being hospitalized. Melly had a talk with him about his father, he was dying and didn't have much life left in him. Melly took them to see him. Before he knew it, it was time to leave. Blue ran away later that week, Tess found her. Their mom arrived home with bad news, Adrian had died!

He couldn't believe Adrian had died even though he was expecting it. They just carried on as if it never happened. The funeral was the day after, then everyone would come to his house to pay their respects. His father would be cremated. Sarah cried and Melly sang her "Mama's Going to Buy you a Mockingbird", hence the title. The day after that, it rained, Jeremy and Tess hid in a church until it stopped. Tess told him about Gwen and her story.

Mr. Medford and Melly discussed the Talbot's moving into an apartment while Jeremy told her that they shared a room together. she found it ironic. The next few days went by very quickly, Melly bought the apartment, Tess and Jeremy cleaned, organized and decorated it. After dinner, Sarah asked Mr. Medford if she could call him Grandpa he said yes and told Jeremy he could too if he wanted to. Monday afternoon, they had music. Long story short, Tess and Jeremy are now in the choir.

The next morning more snow fell, they made a snowman together. Christmas Was just around the corner, Aunt Margery would be coming over to celebrate with them. They went gift shopping. For Christmas Grandpa was going to let Tess wear jeans and sweaters. On Christmas morning, Jeremy woke up before everyone else, as he passed by Melly's half full stocking, he decided to give her Hoot, the owl statue that Adrian had given him.
