Classification

Uses

AND

  • Bifur is a good choice for any type of work that needs to invoke the Art Deco era. Its striking style makes it suitable for large headlines or display type.
  • Works great for poster headlines to catch attention.

Bifur is classified as...

Uses

  • A sans serif font because it lacks serifs. It is not a stencil font because it would not be created from cut outs.

Sans Serif

  • A category of typefaces that do not use serifs, small lines at the ends of characters.

Stencil Font

  • A stencil font is one that appears to be a cut out that can be replicated numerous times. Stencils were originally used in army labeling.
  • Stencil fonts can be serif or sans serif

SERIF

VS.

SANS SERIF

Release

  • Released in 1929.
  • Released as a two-part and two-color font.
  • It is hard to classify but is technically a sans serif font.
  • Some call it a stencil font.

Around the World

P22 Bifur

  • In 1929, the infamous stock market crash occurred on “Black Thursday” to officially note the beginning of the Depression.
  • Albert Einstein proposed his famous Theory of Relativity.
  • Art Deco Design Period 1920's - 1930's
  • In 2004 Richard Keglar created a version of Bifur called P22 Bifur which is available in 6 fonts. It has all the upper case and other characters from Cassandre’s original design and adds lower case characters .

Font Design

  • It uses grey as an element of design as it shades in to create a place for your mind to fill in the letters. It is a two part font. There is the main design of the black, thick parts and then the gray implied shapes.

Counters

Adolphe Mouron Cassandre

  • Many letters that normally have counters only have implied non-enclosed counters in this font such as R and P. The black outline creates the counter but leaves it open. The gray then fills it in.
  • Ukrainian-French painter, commercial poster artist and typeface designer.
  • He later also created Peignot, another interesting and well-known typeface.
  • In P22 bifur, the lower case letters have no counters except in the o the counter exists but only half.

Aspects of Font

  • Cassandre also left out many of the main lines of the font in letters such as the T and the H.
  • He leaves out the main lines and fills it with shading to imply the shape. The brain is so familiar with the general letter forms that it fills in the design.
  • In P22, the descenders that are not straight, such as in the j and the y are created only with the shaded grey.
