In the 20th century, the age of nationalism rises in Asia and Africa.

Nationalism is an ideology that asserts that a nation is formed by a group of people with a common identity, language, history, and set of customs.

  • The French invaded Haiti to force people into slavery and steal silver
  • The slaves revolted and fought for independence
  • They created their own nation (now known as Haiti)
  • This inspired other nations in Latin America to break free from their slavery chains

The French Revolution

  • loyalty to one's nation
  • feeling superiority over other nations
  • patriotic feelings, principles, or efforts
  • Known as the birth of nationalism
  • Reached a peak in 1790 when the French were at war with other European nations
  • Napoleon sought power and reintroduced slavery in France and it caused citizens to revolt
  • It ended with approval of a new constitution in 1795
  • This gave people the idea that they owned the state, which also inspired nations around it to revolt against their governments.
