Software Licences

Open Source

Software licences define how software can be redistributed and used.

When you purchase software you purchase a licence & agree to its terms.

Two main kinds are:

  • Open Source
  • Proprietary

Permission to use the software and access to view & modify the source code.

+ Simpler licensing.

+ Source code can be modified.

+ Fast update cycle.

+ Less "tie-in" due to open standards.

- Software can be abandoned.

- Difficult to maintain.

- No professional support.

- Source code can identify security flaws.

Proprietary

Permission to use the software but intellectual property rights retained.

+ Expectation that software is maintained.

+ Simpler to update.

+ Good professional support.

+ Better usability.

- Complicated licensing.

- Source code cannot be modified.

- Updates can take a long time.

- Can be difficult to change software.
