"It is the east, and Juliet is the sun! Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief" (Act 2, Scene 2 Lines 3-5)

Early in the play, Montague describes Romeo as the artificial night. When Romeo saw Juliet, he describes her as the day. This quote is significant to the relationship between Romeo and Juliet because they are from feuding houses that forbid them to be together. Therefore they are like the sun and the moon. It is a common belief among people that the moon and the sun cannot see each other.

"Come night, come Romeo, come thou day in night, for thou wilt lie upon the wings of night" (Act 3, Scene 2, Line 17-18)

Shakespeare uses night as a blanket that shields Romeo and Juliet from the prying eyes of their families and friends. Night is like a cloak that allows them to be together without judgement. Therefore Juliet is always wishing for night to arrive quickly.

"O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright. It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night" (Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 43-44)

Romeo uses light to describe Juliet's beauty. Throughout the play, she is associated with light and sun. This portrays that she is a glorious beauty to the audience and captures their attention. However, her glowing beauty is important to Romeo as he is the night. Juliet is able to lift Romeo's spirits and improve his mood.

Effects of light and dark on the play

"Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out And makes himself an artificial night. Black and portentous must this humour prove" (Act 1, Scene 1, Lines 129-131)

"It was the lark, the herald of the morn, No nightingale. Look, love, what envious streaks Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east. Night's candles are burnt out, and jocund day Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops. I must be gone and live, or stay and die." (Act 3, Scene 5, Lines 6-11)

The motif of light and dark creates a sense of deep emotions and feelings throughout the audience. Shakespeare has effectively used light and dark to make the star-crossed lovers appeal to the viewers.Romeo and Juliet are like the sun and the moon, they can't co-exist. This creates a tragic ending.

Romeo & Juliet are sympathized, causing the play to be even more dramatic and sad.

This quote creates a feeling of sadness and darkness for the audience. Romeo is like the dark, he hides from the light. Shakespeare uses this quote to show the audience that Romeo is in very dark and mournful mood. This shows the audience that Romeo is particularly sensitive character in the play. He is easily swayed by his own emotions.

Day is like the enemy to Romeo and Juliet, once day comes they must depart each other. They can only show their affection in the night. Shakespeare has associated light with evil and dark with good. Thus creating a dramatic effect on the play, it is also very different because light is usually good, vice versa.
