-Colonists in could supply bountiful amounts of raw materials to England

Conclusion:

The English colony in Jamestown hadn’t found what the king of England had asked them to find. They didn’t find gold or the route to the Orient, or the lost colony of the English in the Roanoke. They found tobacco instead. Jamestown, Virginia, was the first ever permanent English settlement in the New World. The government, language, customs, beliefs and aspirations of these early Virginians were all part of the United States’ heritage today. As one of the thirteen colonies that united to declare independence from the British crown, Virginia has come a long way from being a Southern British colony to a thriving metropolitan state.

Economy/Resources

-At first, Jamestown was a dying colony

-1617: John Rolfe was successful in growing tobacco

-English grew and sold tobacco in massive quantities back at home in England

-In England, tobacco was processed and sold, or exported again for even greater profit.

-Tobacco industry was backbone of the Virginian economy

-If the tobacco industry were to collapse, Virginia would be crushed

-Industries of silk, woolen cloth and boats were established

-Colony also became a new market for finished goods that were from England

Growth of Tobacco was discovered

Interesting Anecdotes

Pocahontas:

-'Pocahontas' was the daughter of the powerful chief of the Algonquian Indians in Virginia.

-Cpt. John Smith was taken captive by the Indians and almost killed – until Pocahontas saved his life.

-Relations with the Indians worsened, Pocahontas was taken captive

-She was released after the Indians paid a ransom

-Pocahontas was a vital link between the Native Americans and the English

Starving Time:-When the colony started up, life was plagued with disease, famine and Algonquian attacks. -Land was unfriendly, brutal and unforgiving. - = death of most of the original population-One winter in Jamestown was the worst - “Starving Time.” -No more than 10% of population survived-Eating pets and mice to be able to survive, or cannibalism, or digging up graves for food. -Caught stealing oatmeal? One man was, and he was chained to a tree and starved to death

Tobacco = bad?:

-King of England strongly objected to the selling of tobacco, although it was the backbone of the Virginian economy-“loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain [and] dangerous to the lungs.” -Still permitted it to be sold though (economic reasons)
