monarchs use "thermals" or also called over-drafts of warm air
The Monarch butterfly starts as a caterpillar and then it sheds it's skin 5 times. Every stage is called an "instar". here is the gross part, the caterpillar every so often eats the skin it has shed. Ick!!!! the caterpillar is in this stage from 9-14 days depending on the summer temp.
