In researching this project, I tried to get to the root of Jerry Lee Lewis’ fame. I typed “memories of Jerry Lee Lewis” into Google, in an attempt to find out what made him special. Instead, I discovered he did a television special, and in it, a piece called “Precious Memories”. Then I tried “legacy of Jerry Lee Lewis”. As it turns out, there is a DVD of a live concert he did called “Legacy”. What I’m trying to get at, is that Jerry Lee Lewis IS a legacy. He’s been through success and turmoil, and still came through with a wonderful career at the end of it.
Let’s start at the beginning. Jerry Lee Lewis was born on September 29th, 1935 to parents Elmo and Mamie Lewis in Ferriday, Louisiana. His family was very poor growing up. Jerry only had 2 piano lessons before stopping because he preferred to play his way, not the way he was being taught.
Jerry's playing style
Jerry was influenced by listening to the works of Hank Williams, Jimmy Rodgers and Al Jolson as well as many other popular music artists.
Jerry has been married six times. His first marriage was to Dorothy Barton, which lasted for just over a year and a half. He was 14, she was 17. They had no children.
His second marriage, to Jane Mitchum began almost a month before his previous one ended. They had two children, during a 4 year marriage.
Jerry then married his cousin (who at the time was just 13 years of age), Myra Gale Brown. This caused much controversy not only because they were cousins, and that again, Jerry got married before his previous marriage ended, but because of Myra's age. Their marriage lasted for 13 years.
He went through three other marriages at that point, and had another three children.
Two of his children are now deceased, as well as his fifth wife.
Jerry's musical career really began to take off in 1956. His two hit singles, "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" are two memorable releases from that year.
Jerry Lee Lewis' Rock style.
"Great Balls of Fire" would later be made into a biographical film about Jerry (1989).
The top five songs in Jerry's career include "Whole Lotta Shakin' goin' On", "Great Balls of Fire", "Another Place, Another Time" and "What's Made Wilwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)".
Jerry was a part of the music team on the film "Grease".
I think that the reason why Jerry Lee Lewis is still going strong, is because he has been through lots of tough things, but always keeps his head up high.
