Learning Objective: YWBAT match corresponding surfaces given an object's perspective and orthographic views.

Essential Question: Why do engineers and product designers use orthographic views?

Do Now: (3 min)

1. What are the two forms of communicating information in a technical sketch? (Hint: look at yesterday's notes.)

2. In the upper right corner is the isometric view of an object. To the left is the orthographic 3-view of that object. Match the numbered surfaces in the orthographic sketches to the lettered surface of the perspective view

Unit 6: Manual Drafting

Views of an Object

All objects have multiple sides. How many sides does this Rubik's cube have?

Model Notes

Most objects have 6 sides.

Orthographic Projection

When: Saturday (3/25) from 1 - 5pm

Where: NYU ITP - 721 Broadway (b/w E 4th St and Astor Pl)

  • Orthographic projection is the process of extending all points and edges of an object onto a flat plane.
  • The extensions are all at a right angle to the plane.

Today's Assignment

  • 06.02 - Complete the exercise packet on orthographic projection.
  • It will be collected at the end of class.
  • We will review as a class in the last 10 minutes.
  • You can work on this with a partner or solo.
  • If you are working with a partner, work quietly, stay on task, and genuinely collaborate/discuss.
  • If this is not happening, I will remind the group once to complete the work as directed.

Complete the form in your email to attend!

Basic Laptop Rules:

1. No music. And no headphones - except when watching assigned videos.

2. Only use the laptop assigned to you.

3. Carry the laptop by the base (not the screen).

Capturing Multi-Views

Multi-views can be visualized in a couple of ways.

Think, Pair, Share

In your notes, answer:

If most objects have six views, why is the orthographic 3-view the most commonly used layout for technical sketches in the design and manufacturing industries?

Vs.

Exercise

The system of views that orthographically captures all six sides of an object is called a Multi-View.

One way is to think about rotating the object to each of its 6 sides and sketching each view.

Another way is to imagine the object is sitting in a glass box and then unfold the box
