Nika Revolts

Imagine if you went to Gillette Stadium to watch a game but instead a riot happens?

Well, that’s basically what happened at the Hippodrome in Constantinople on January 13, 532.

There were four teams in the hippodrome, named the red, blue, white, and green. Emperor Justinian was a supporter of the blue team. The crowd was yelling for their color but then started yelling. “nika, nika, nika”. Nika means conquer or win.

The emperor, Justinian was just sitting safely in his palace watching the chariot races when the crowd started yelling at him, “Nika, nika, nika!” and they attacked the palace.

The riot lasted a whole week and nearly half of the city burned or was destroyed. Tens of thousands of people were killed.

It’s too bad that so many people died because some people disagreed with the emperor.
