Earth: A Layered Planet

Activity Time

Each table group will be given an image to represent the Earth’s Layers

In your table group:

a) Create a Venn diagram listing the similarities and differences between the Earth’s layers and the image you have been given.

b) As a group create a quick lesson, for a grade 3 class, using your image to explain the Earth’s layers.

c) Present your lesson as a group to the entire class.

d) The group listening should evaluate the lesson with the following criteria sheet.

  • Were all 4 layers of the Earth mentioned and compared to the model? /2
  • Were the various and significant sizes of each layer mentioned? /2
  • Were the differences and similarities between the Earth and the model mentioned? /2
  • Would a grade 3 understand this lesson? /2
  • Did each group member participate? /2

First we are going to look at the

different layers that make up the Earth

In chapter 7 we learned about the surface of the Earth, and the effect that weathering and erosion has towards shaping it.

This new chapter will focus more on the Earth’s structure, such as mountain formation and the processes that precede them.
