Holmes didn't really have a M.O. But the main thing that he did is, he would kill a guest staying at is hotel, drop them down a secret door to his basement, than he would skin them and sell the skeletons to medical schools.
The signature aspect would have to be that he sold the bodies for money, everything that Holmes did was for money, he did insurance fraud and other things for money.
Causes of the criminal behavior
The causes for Holmes to be a murder, i would say that it was because of his abusive father, and that he was bullied in school when he was a child.
He was forced to touch a skeleton in a medical school even though he had a fear, and that was how he overcame his fear and was fascinated in death.

Holmes wasn't caught because of the murders he had done, he wanted to do a insurance fraud, where he faked a friends death and take the insurance money and run, but Holmes killed his friend and took most of the money, with his friends children that he killed, he was caught because of a prisoner he talked to before, he promised him 500 dollars for information, he was caught and the kids were not with him, the police searched for them, found them dead, and then searched his hotel and found more bodies. He was then killed.
