In Erikson's opinion, adolescence was a time of great turnoil. He believed that during this time, ages 12-18, adolescents are dealing with establishing their identity. Teens are developing a sense of personal identity and a sense of self; they're still determining what their values are, what is important to them, and what kind of person they want to be.
Individuals that succeed in this stage leads to confidence and fidelity to oneself. In opposition, failure in this stage leads to role confusion and a weak sense of self, which can result in the failure of later stages.
Erik Erikson created a theory to explain the development of individuals from infancy to adulthood. This theory consists of 8 stages that address different obstacles we're faced with throughout our lives.
