Ecosystem

--the Alpine tundra ecosystem begins at elevations of 11,000 and11,500

--Because of its high elevation, strong winds, and cold temperatures

there is a limitation to what plants can grow there. For example trees do not grow in the alpine and plants that do grow are short and "hug" the ground.

--Strong winds usually blow at 100 miles per hour.

-- Precipitation (rain, hail and snow fall). The average precipitation is around 100 inches per year. Most of this precipitation is in the form of snow.

--Seasons (very long winters and short summers). Summer usually lasts from June to September at about 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. In the winter it goes from October to May at below freezing temperatures.

--Very few animals are found in this habitat year round but some have developed the adaptations needed to survive and thrive in this landscape year round.

Location

Adaptations (plant life)

--Unlike arctic tundra the alpine tundra regions are spread out all over the place on earth. These are a few areas where alpine tundra is located: Rockies, Sierra, and Cascade Mountains in North America, the Andes in South America, the Himalayas in Asia, the Alps and Pyrenees in Europe, and the Rift Mountains of Africa.

--Non-flowering lichens cling to rocks and soil. Their outer fungal layers can absorb more than their own weight in water.

--Some of the plants have dark green/colored leaves so that they may absorb more heat from the sun

--Flowering plants rotate to catch as much sun as available

--Plants are matted against the earth, keeping

them away from harmful wind.

--Most plants are long-lived perennial

plants. They don’t grow stems, leaves,

flowers and fruit each season.

Classification

Yellow-Bellied Marmot

--Marmots, Mountain Goats, Bighorn Sheep, and Pika. However one of the most famous worldwide is the Snow Leopard.

--Yellow-bellied marmots will hibernate for eight months out of the year

--Larger mammals have thick and heavily insulated fur to protect them from the cold, they also migrate to warmer locations during the winter
