The ferret and Ear mites
Cause
Treatment
- Occurs when the animals ears are cleaned too much, removing natural protective oils.
- Medications are used to control the ear mites, but has no effect on the eggs. so routine is continued at least 2 weeks.
- Tails should also be treated also, because ferrets sleep with tail beside ear.
Symptoms
- Color and odor of a ferret's earwax is the most recognizable sign. normally the wax is red and odorless but w/ infection color will be black/grey.
- Itching, oozing of a mucous-like substance around ears & red/blackish crusting on outer ear. Hair loss around head and neck. Ear infections.
Diagnosis
- Vet may want to consider other problems such as fleas, dermatitis, or other bacterial/parasitic infections.
- Can ID an ear mite by conducting a routine ear exam. (swabbing a sample of earwax, or looking through a microscope.
prevention
- Don't clean ears too much!
- use medications
