problems in the government
The Maya had a bad polity, no overall king, a lot of fighting between the city states, and overall compitition not teamwork. That was a big part in the downfall of their civilization. When things started to get bad for them the fighting increased, but this time it was for food not for intimidation. This led to much more death than neccisary. That also ended the cycle, it made it impossable for their civilization to recover. They where focused on tacking resourses, not trying to fix the situation.

Religion continued
The religion of the Maya held together the Mayan civilization long after it should have fallen apart. The Mayan people beleved in the religion so strongly that they stuck through the extremly unbarable (hunger, poverty, sickness, and so on) on a belife that things would get better after enough time and sacrifies. The Mayan people belived in their religion to the death, and that is what saved them from falling apart for the longest time.
Ultimatly the maya did themselfes in by the aggriculteral, and architechtual practices they had. By these practices they lost all farmland, wich led to starvation, they polluted the air wich led to sickness, and they lost the small amount of crops they had due to sickness because of manocroping.
