roller coaster design

Edwin Prescott"s roller coaster design was patented on August 16 1898.

The US patent office called it " The pleasure railway". Later August 16 was celebrated national roller coaster day in honor of Edwin Prescott's invention. Prescott later improved the original design in 1901 with a new patent that used a ellipse design rather than a circular one in order to make it more comfortable and safer to ride.

More money was made from people watching the roller coaster then from people riding.

There were many advertisements saying that if you brought a cup of water on the loop-the-loop then the water would not spill

loop-the-loop

The loop loop roller coaster based on Edwin's patent was built in Coney Island, Brooklyn in 1901. The ride was designed in ellipse shape which had a gentler and larger curve then the roller coaster's that were invented before. the more oval shape helped remove the strain from the passengers necks and bones and had an amazing safety record. the cars had rubber wheels and carried 4 passengers per ride which lasted 5 minutes. The roller coaster used centrifugal force to keep cars on track.
