The Phalanx

In the phalanx, soldiers...

  • Form into rows, one after another
  • The front row creates a wall with overlapping shields
  • The first two rows use their spears to stab at the enemy

As the soldiers in the front row get tired, soldiers from the back rows move up (Greek Warfare)

The Shield

  • Size: 3-4 feet in diameter
  • Break-down: A round wooden shield covered with bronze
  • Uses: Blocking blows, knocking the enemy down, covering the neighboring soldier
  • Special: Can be used defensively (Blocking blows) and offensively (Knocking someone down)

The Doru (Spear)

  • Size: 7-9 feet long
  • Break-down: A sharp spearhead, a sturdy wooden beam/ handle, a spiked point at the end
  • Uses: A close- mid range weapon
  • Special: Has a spiked point
  • Can be used to plant spear in the grow
  • Can be used as a subsitue spaerhead (Greek Warfare)

Armor

  • Size: Size of the soldier, chestplate can weigh up to 60 lbs.
  • Break-down: Composed of bronze or leather (helmet, chestplate, leg guards)
  • Uses: Protection against swords, spears, arrows, etc.
  • Special: Each city-state had their own crest on their helmet
  • Armor quality depended on the wealthiness of the soldier
  • Poor soldiers would only have a leather chestplate
  • Wealthier soldiers were covered in bronze armor

What is a Hoplite?

A hoplite is a common Greek soldier with a doru (spear) for close range combat. The hoplite also features heavy armor with a large shield for protection.
