The Eastern Cottontail (Rabbit) is very solitary and territorial species. Their territory depends on the terrain and food supply. The natural habitat is normally about 6 acres in size due to the territorial traits of the Cottontail. They search the surrounding areas by standing on their hind legs. The Cottontail evades predators by freezing or flushing. They can also can leap up to eight feet in the air and run approximately 18 miles per hour. They use vocals like low growing, grunting, squeals, or screams to warn others of danger. They also thump the ground with their hind feet for intimidation.
The Cottontail diet consists of grass and herbs, but they can be found in gardens enjoying peas and lettuce.
