Dental hygienists play an important role as a member of the dental health team. Dental hygienists act as educators and motivators in prevention of disease and maintenance of oral health. They remove tartar, stain, and plaque from teeth. They also take x-rays and apply preventive agents such as fluoride and sealants. Employment opportunities in this field are wide. Hygienists are in demand in dental practices, hospitals, nursing homes, and health clinics.
Wallace State Community College offers this course of study leading to an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. The overall goal of the Dental Hygiene Program is to provide students with an educational opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and professional attitudes necessary for successful employment as a dental hygienist. The Dental Hygiene Program requires a minimum of five semesters for completion.
Students accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program should expect to be in class Monday through Friday 8:00-3:00. There will be some semesters where you will be off 1-2 days a week. Most clinical practice will be done in our dental clinic but students will be expected to go to clinical rotation sites in Birmingham, AL beginning in the Fall semester of their second year.
Applicant Must:
1. Meet all general admission requirements of Wallace State Community College.
2. Submit an application to the Admissions office declaring Dental Hygiene as major.
3. Submit a Dental Hygiene Program application to the Dental Hygiene program director.
4. Attain a minimum ACT score of 18 and submit score to the Admissions office.
5. Possess a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
