Ideology in The Crucible

Integrity represented in The Crucible

In the final scene of the crucible, John Proctor shows integrity by telling the truth and what he knows to be right at the risk of being hanged. He values his character over his own life.

In the play, the puritains possessed an ideology that had a narrow-minded perspective. Anyone who thinks or does contrary to the ideology were thought to be participating in witchcraft. Due to Abby being percived as young and innocent, the court believed what she was saying. This kept her from being caught and punished when she fled the town. John however, was an independent man who did not follow the ideals of the village. Eventually, at the end of the play, he was accused of witchcraft and sentenced to death.

Integrity and Reputation

Reputation represented in the Crucible

Integrity is the idea of being morally right or correct.

Reputation is best explained by the way others view an individual or character.

Proctor and Abigail both show that they care about their reputaion, Proctors care for reputation is conveyed as a result of him maintaining integrity, this reputation "clean". Whereas Abby does her best to maintain her reputation throughout the play to hide the fact that she has been lying and accusing the innocent of witchcraft this entire time.

Hysteria-Mob Mentality In The Crucible

In the Crucible, John Proctor and many other people were forced to lie, so that they may save their lives. However, John Proctor decides not to go with the mob mentality and chooses an honorable death. Another example of mob mentality is when Abigail acts as if she sees a devil from Mary Warren at the court, influencing judge Denforth to believe Abigail is innocent.

Hysteria-Mob Mentality

Hysteria/Mob mentality can be described as peer pressure, when your judgements are being influenced by the environment
