Is there a Sports 'Gene' a personality that makes Champions? The nature vs Nurture Debate
Sports Psychologist spend a lot of time investigating what affects athletes performances and looking at ways to improve performances for different types of personalities.
One simple 'model' of personalities is that all athletes either have the Introvert or Extrovert 'trait'
Extroverts tend to become bored quickly, are poor at
tasks that require a lot of concentration and constantly
seek change and excitement.
They tend to prefer team sports where this is social interaction, fast paced changing environment and using gross motor skills.
Extroverts are less responsive to pain than introverts. Extroverts are said to be more successful in sporting situations because they can cope with competitive and distractive situations better than introverts.
Introverts are individuals who don’t actively seek
excitement and would rather be in calm stable environments, they are happy to be on their own, they are sometimes described as loners.
They tend to prefer tasks and sports that require high levels of concentration and precision (fine motor skills)
performed under low levels of arousal.
