DXM

History:

The FDA approved DXM in 1958 after research supported its legitimacy and effectiveness as a cough suppressant. After its approval, it was an OTC medication under the name Romilar. Then in1975, the popularity and extreme abuse of DXM was increasing, then Romilar was removed from the OTC market. However, DXM was excluded from the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) of 1970, therefore, it was still legal to produce and use. After a few years, its removal from OTC, companies began introducing refined DXM products that were designed to limit recreational use by creating an bad taste if you used it a lot. Within a short time those same manufactures began to produce forms of DXM with a little bit of an better flavor. This was showing signs that the abuse level may increase and repeat like before. The reason why DXM is a drug that becomes highly abused in extreme levels is hard to reveal. Sadly, recreational abuse has caused concern across the U.S., allowing many local, state, and federal officials to increase their security of the drug. If the extreme level of abusing continues then the government may have to add DXM to the CSA.

U.S. & DXM

DXM

Once again, DXM which contains dextromethorphan is not illegal in any aspect yet there are many restrictions including legal age of 18 required to buy any medicine that consist of dextromehorphan. Yet Illinois has a law that restricts possession of this drug using it to sell it. Besides that the U.S. laws are no different than New Hampshire's.

New Hampshire & DXM

There are not any specific restrictions on DXM, or any abusive cough medicine in New Hampshire. Yet, the Stop & Shop franchise has passed a law in the towns of Hudson, Milford, Bedford and Peterborough, to restrict sales of cold and cough medicines containing dextromethorphan, a synthetically-produced ingredient in a number of over-the-counter products. Only people 18 and older will be allowed to purchase medications containing the drug. Federal law regulates sales of cold and cough medicines containing pseudoephedrine, another drug used to get high. By law, these medicines must be stocked behind the counter or in a locked cabinet and may be sold only to customers 18 and older who provide photo identification and sign a register.

Quit!

DMX which contains dextromethorphan is a rare situation when it comes to addiction. Because this drug does not create a physical addiction in which your brain and body "needs" it. Yet it creates a psychological addiction which means your body wants to feel the adventurous and mind tending feeling. This is common when your socially interacting with friends and doing it often leads to your body wanting to do it even more. So common techniques to quit is for parents to secure common cough medicine and to be aware of their children using it. For adults, psychological counseling and cognitive-behavioral therapy is needed.
