Charles Poulett Thomson

Act of Union 1840-1841

Down Sides

Charles Poulett Thomson played a very significant role in order to make the act of union happen. He was the man that was sent to get agreement from both Lower and Upper Canada. He was successful in his job as he received consent from Lower Canada in November 1837 and Upper Canada in December 1837.

Both Canada's had a group of people that were against the act. For Upper Canada the family compact disagreed with union. The family compact is a group of people that judged collectively the laws of Upper Canada. In Lower Canada religious leaders didn't like the act because of the anti-French proposal.

After Thoughts

Once the agreement was made, what used to be Lower Canada realized that they were at the disadvantage of the deal. They were displeased with the act of union because they had lower population and smaller debt. However, Lower Canada came to consensuses and settled with the act of union.

Here is the first page of the Act of Union agreements. Stating all that would be done to unite the two Canada's together.
