Our state on this diagram is red, this means our state was on the republic side. Unlike California for example, was Democrat. For Texas, they were split which means they have both sides.
Abraham Lincoln was president during this time. People claim he fought during this war because he wanted the Union to stay together. The Union is referring to the United States. Lincoln got to be president by Electoral Vote not a Popular Vote.
It isn't about slavery because not every part of the country own slaves. The North and south owned slaves which made the people learning about the get confused. The North was respectful and paid their slaves. The South were more strict and punished them if they did anything wrong. In Specifics, the North payed their slaves and they were free to leave. The South would beat them if they didn't obey.
Lets say you are in war and you are siding with the North. The South took you as prisoner? What do you think will happen?
People believe that Civil War was about slavery. It is about state and union rights.

Since you were the North Side, the south took you as a prisoner. Southerns were the most harsh out of the two sides in the war. You will end up dying of starvation or of a disease.
