CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING ORGANISMS

MOVEMENT

  • Use their large ear-like fins to propel body around

  • Movement of arm help with direction & crawling along sea floor

  • Suckers help bring food into beak by creating water currents

RESPIRATION

  • Use siphon to pump water through gills that are located inside mantle cavity to respire

  • Gills made of feathery filament

  • Use their outer skin, epidermis, to respire

SENSITIVITY

  • Have light-sensitive proteins that they have in eye also in skin

  • Can taste what they touch

  • Have hair that can register sound

  • Can grow up to about 20cm (8 inches) in length

  • Grows very fast

  • Arms can regrow

REPRODUCTION

  • Male delivers sperms into female's body with hectocotylus

  • Eggs fertilize in female's body then released when mature enough

  • When released hidden under rocks or shells

EXCRETION

  • Carried out by pair of nephridia, tubular structures

  • Along the tube, fluids from coelom are collected and exchanges salt and other substance with body tissue

NUTRITION

  • They eat worms, bivalves, cope-pods, crustaceans

  • They swallow prey as whole

  • Prey never exceeds 1-2mm

  • Use suckers to help bring food to beak by creating water current
