The first Polynesians steped foot onto Easter Island in this year.

During 1200-1500, statue construction on the island reached its peak, and few statues were created after this.

By this time the statues had been pulled down by islanders.

The statues of Easter Island were still standing at this point.

The settlers spoke a Polynesian dialect, which related to Hawaiian and Marquesan. The dialect spoken by the islanders became isolated around the year 400.

The population diminished greatly. It reached between 1/4 and 1/10 of its prior number.

Swiss writer Erich von Daeniken believed that the Easter Island statues were work of extra-terrestrial

beings that were stranded on Easter

Island until their eventual rescue.

Porpoise bones suddenly disappear from the piles of garbage heaps. They could no longer harpoon porpoises, since the trees used to create canoes were now extinct.

During this time warriors on Easter Island had their heyday. Their spears and daggers are still scattered across the ground on the island.

During this time less than 1/4 of the garbage heaps belonged to bones of fish; instead most of the bones came from porpoises.

Heyerdahl argued that the island was populated by advanced American Indians, who received civilization across the Atlantic from more advanced socities of the Old World. Heyerdahl's raft voyages were meant to prove the possibility of his theory.

Pollen records show that destruction of Easter's forests was well under way by this year, which was just a few centuries after the start of human settlement.

The palm finally becomes extinct. This is due not only to being chopped down, but also because the rats on the island prevented its regeneration. The rats chewed the reserved palm nuts and so they could not germinate.

The forest is ultimately destroyed because the islanders cleared land for gardens and cut down trees to build canoes, transport statues, and burn. Rats ate the seeds, and native bird species went extinct and could no longer pollinate the trees and disperse fruit.

This marks the earliest radiocarbon dates associated with human activities.

The island receives its name from Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen on Easter.

Captain James Cook realizes the islanders were Polynesians during his visit to Easter Island.
