-Would you falsely accuse someone of rape to prevent you getting in trouble?

Why does it matter?

-It matters because young boys were falsely accused of rape and luckly didnt get lynched.

-The boys could've lost their life because of something they didn't do.

-Basically they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

During the Great Depression many people took freight cars to get places; find somewhere with work.

In 1931, two white women were riding a train along side two groups of men. (a black group and a white group) A fight started between the two groups, the black men won and threw the whites off the train.

The white men decided to report it to the local sheriff, and they stopped the train in Scottsboro, Alabama. Everyone on the train was arrested. The two women were trying to cross the state lines for the purpose of prostitution; it was a crime to take a minor across state lines for that purpose.

9 trial

-Victoria was in trouble because her friend, Ruby, was a minor and was crossing state lines for the purpose of prostitution. Victoria did not want to get in trouble so her and Ruby said the black men raped them. (which was false)

-In 1931 rape had a punishment of death.

-Since it was a white accusing a black it would've been normal to have them lynched.

-Instead of lynching they decided to hold a trial; decided by the people of Scottsboro.

-Due to the situation, the results have been decided before the trial had begun.

-Scottsboro boys were convicted and sentence to death.

-All but Roy Wright was convicted of rape, instead he got life in prison.
