We agree with this outcome because the Constitution clearly states that religion is important, but didn't say anything about education. Also, rights of the minority are clearly protected here.

Wisconsin v. Yoder
Precedent
This case set the precedent that protects small religious groups over the larger interest of the states. It also opened up options for homeschooling.
The Supreme Court
The supreme court made a unanimous decision in favor of Yoder. Justice Douglas filed a partial dissent but agreed with the majority in the end.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Defendant: Wisconsin
- Jonas Yoder, Wallace Miller, Adin Yutzy, and their parents are part of Amish communities.
- Their parents refused to send the kids to school after eighth grade because it contradicted their religious beliefs.
- They were brought to court by the state of Wisconsin and fined $5.00 for breaking the law stating children must go to school until they are sixteen.
- After appealing many times, their case finally reached the Supreme Court.
Interpretation
The Justices mainly looked at the plain meaning of the text to interpret the Constitution in this case. They decided in favor of Yoder because the First Amendment clearly states that people have right to practice whichever religion they want.
