  • Mara was born in 1925 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia
  • When she was about 4 she had moved in with her grandparents in Salavonia
  • Her parents gotten divorced at 5 , her father had remarried at about 6 and she moved in with him

  • Hvar was occupied by the Croat Ustashi and was very unsafe at the time so they went to Split, occupied by the Italians
  • In December the Italians deported Mara and her father to Piedmont, Castellamonte is where they were interned as prisoners of war
  • They arrived at Zermatt
  • Their guard handed them over and they spent the night in a hotel there
  • They became famous and were treated like heros in Zermatt
  • People felt admiration for their accomplishment, they also felt comapsstion ther their lot
  • Mara remained in Switzerland until after the war

  • Mara had married Ivo

  • In september 1943, Germans occupied northern Italy
  • Mara's father, come friedns, and her fled to the mountains
  • They were determined to cross over to Switzerland

  • When they got to Zermatt, Swtizerland, the path they were on got steeper and stepper as they went up the mountains
  • Their party had 5 refugees, 2 men, and 3 women
  • As they gotten up towards the mountain they were all given a drug for endurance ( pilots take this drug before doing a difficult assignment)
  • They were fastened to a rope to go down steep cliffs
  • Mara's throat was parched, the wind blew my hair in her face and obstructed her vision. Mara's knees buckled and the glacier never seemed to end. Every time now when she jumped, she fell on the ice, until she no longer had the strength to get up.
  • Her father was the same way like she was but still helped Mara get back up on her feet.

  • April 1941 Hitlers troops occupied Belgrade
  • Her father and her got to escape with her Catholic and Ethnic German mother who helped
  • They had to escaped to Dalmatian Island Hvar
