Producing our own food
Once we get to our land in Tecumseh we began to build our sod house. The next day we started to produce our food. We grew beans, wheat, vegetables and fruit. We watered them accordingly and they began to grow rather quickly. Within the first month the food was ready to eat.
What happens after the land run is over? We are left with another method of obtaining our own land. The lottery. Two lotteries were held one in 1901 and then again in 1906, many lands were distributed in this manner.
Sooner is a name given to settlers who entered the unassigned lands before the official start of the land run of 1889. People would line up around borders of what is now the Oklahoma District. Anyone who entered and occupied the land prior to the opening time would be denied the right to claim land.
we made our home from densely packed grass and roots. This method is called a "sod" house. Though these homes are only temporary they are well suited for travelers
There were several horse races in Oklahoma territory. The race had included about 20,000 self sufficient people who all gathered to claim their land. The one on September in 1891 was held to settle Tecumseh.

To prepare for our trip we began to pack our wagon. We took the following: Bacon, beans, coffee, flour, lard, salt, Sugar, water, whiskey, bed roll, books, medicine, cookware, eating utensils, keep sakes, mirror, tools and our tent & gear .

We ended up with a free range prairie, the land is open and wild. High grasses make traveling difficult but its worth it in the end.
