Settling the American West

Government Promotion

Many people died while building the railroads and trying to establish a farmstead.

Homestead Act: gave 160 acres to people to settle the West.

Gave money to the railroads companies to build in the west.

Native Americans lost their lands and their way of life.

Conflicts arose between differing factions:

Settlers v Indian

Farmers v Ranchers

Farmers v Railroads

Many people went broke or died.

Removed Native Americans from the most desired lands to protect the settelers and railroads.

African Americans faced racism.

Pre-Civil War

There were two waves of settlement. The first was from 1849-1860 and the second from from 1860-1890.

The pre-war settlers were seeking financial opprtunities.

* 1849 - settlers began going west because of the

discovery of gold "in them there hills".

California's population exploded after the discovery in 1848.

Technologies Contribution

New machines allowed the farmer to harvest an acre in 3 hours instead of 61.

New technology improved farming yeilds and made it easier. Enticing many to move to the plains and the west to farm.

Wheat production inceased from 250 million to 680 million in the time period from 1870-1900.

Farming products became

75% of the total exports from the US.
