Life's Work #2

He worked as a structural engineer in Chicago at Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), an architectual and engineering firm . He was inspired to become an engineer by not only his father, but also an older cousin, who also helped him get into college so he could study engineering.

One Magnificent Mile, one of Fazlur's greatest blueprints. It stands in Chicago, Illinois.

After receiving his Fulbright scholarship combined with his Pakistani Government scholarship, he moved to America and recieved two degrees at the University of Illinois: one in structural engineering, and the other in theoretical and applied mechanics. He finally acquired his PhD in structural engineering in 1955.

Fazlur Khan

He was born in Bangladesh on April 3rd, 1922 and died on March 27th, 1982 from a heart attack. His father, Abdur Rahman Khan, was a highly respected high school teacher of math. In addition to this, he wrote several mathematical textbooks. He was married to Khadija Khan, Fazlur's Mother.

Amazing Architect

He is best known around the globe for his drawing of the Sears tower (aka the Willis tower) in 1970 to 1973. It was the tallest tower in the WORLD from 1973 to 1998, until the Twin Towers exceeded it's height. Bruce Graham assisted him in designing the blueprints for the Sears tower. Some other famous buildings Khan helped design include: The John Hancock Center, The US Bank Center, One Magnificent Mile, and The Hajj Terminal.

Personal Life

The Khan family was a family of three, consisting of his wife, Liselotte, and his one daughter, Yasmin Khan. His favorite hobby was spending time with his family and friends. He also liked table tennis, singing, poetry, etc. His favorite poet was a man named Rabindranath Tagore. He often took his family out to listen to poetry.
