The Seven Ages of Man

Subject Matter, Theme

Subject: The subject is the lifetime of a man which is shown in seven stages: infant, child, lovestruck, soldier, mature man, elderly man, and death.

Theme: The theme is everybody matures and dies. We say this because the story is about the life cycle of a person who grows up and dies.

Mood and Imagery

Structure: The structure of this story is blank verse, meaning that it has rhythm but no rhyme.

Tone: Everybody dies and some have mundane lifestyles.

Mood: As the readers, we felt that the atmosphere was dying and hoplessness.

Language - Imagery: The reader has a mental image of the stages because the story describes each stage vividly.

Example: "At first the infant, mewling and puking in the nurse's arms."

Rhythm and Rhyme

Language - Rhythm: There is rhythm in the story, using stressed syllables to make the story more rhythmatic.

Language - Rhyme: There is no rhyme in "The Seven Stages of Man" written by William Shakespeare.
