Romeo

Tragic Hero

"Two households, both alike in dignity,

In fair Verona, where we lay out scene"

-- Prologue

"If that thy bent of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow"

-Juliet, Act II scene ii

"A dram of poison, such soon-speeding gear,

As will disperse itself though all the veins

That the life-wary taker may fall dead,

And that the trunk may be discharged of breath"

-Romeo, Act V scene ii

Both quotes above show how rash Romeo was, that, eventually being his tragic flaw.

Romeo and Juliet had just been married and were in love, then Romeo was banished from the kingdom after he caused Tybalt's death. Next, Romeo ends up killing himself when he thinks Juliet is dead.

--In a matter of two days, Romeo went from just married, to dead.

  • often born into nobilty
  • harmatia, or a tragic flaw
  • peripeteia, a reversal of fortune brought on by the hero's flaw
  • Hero's own actions brings their own fate, not outside influences.

If Romeo hadn't approached Juliet at the

party, then neither of them would have died. His own actions, and his flaws, brought his demise.
