Simon and Garfunkel

Edwin Arlington Robinson

"Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got."

Won three Pulitzer Prizes

"Collected Poems" ~ 1921

"The Man Who Died Twice" ~ 1924

"Tristram" ~ 1927

Born in Head Tide, Maine on December 22, 1869.

His childhood was "stark and unhappy."

When he did not make enough off of writing he became a New York Subway Inspector.

Influences for this Poem

He had two brothers:

Dean: Died of a drug overdose

Herman: Had a business that failed, became an alcoholic, and left his family

Written during the Panic of 1893.

Worst depression the USA had ever seen.

Many banks failed because of the collapse of the railroads.

In what ways did his two brothers and the Panic have on the content of this poem?

True Happiness

Real World Meaning

Why do you think that someone that has money can still be unhappy, even though they have everything they could ever want?

Four Stanzas

Iambic Pentameter

Every person has someone that they would like to switch places with. Kind of like the saying, "the grass is greener on the other side" until we get to the other side where the grass is just as green or worse then before. WE think that if I was just him or her my life would be so much better than it is now. However, WE may find that their life was not as good as it seemed from the outside, and we made assumptions that because they had money they would automatically be happy. This is the point that I believe that Edwin is trying to get across.
