Computer Programming Languages Timeline

Python (1991)

Guido Van Rossum released this computing language while working for CWI, also called Stichting Mathematisch Centrum. Python combines many features in one program and can be a very powerful language.

Basic (1964)

FORTRAN (1955)

First Computer Language Created (1842-1843)

Java (1995)

PHP (1995)

FORTRAN was the first of the major computer languages. FORTRAN stands for Formula Translating System. This computer language was invented at the company IBM (International Business Machines). The FORTRAN used a written code and converted it into numerical commands that the computer could understand.

A small team known as "The Green Team" lead by James Gosling was orinally designed for the digital cable industry but ended up becoming perfect for the internet.

Created by Rasmus Lerdorf, this language was written in the C programming language. Ramsus provided the source code so users could improve on it and fix bugs.

Between 1842 and 1843, Ada Lovelace created the first computer language. That computer language was designed for the Analytical Engine created by Charles Babbage. This language consisted of many different numbers.

John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz at Dartmouth University created this computer language. Basic has been upgraded over the years to the point that in 2010, Microsoft had a version.

COBOL (1959)

Pascal (1970)

LISP (1958)

COBOL was created by a group known as Conference on Data Systems Languages or CODASYL. This computer language was designed for big businesses.

John McCarthy of the Massacheusets Institute of Technology created the LISP computer language program. In this language, functions appear in their own definition.

The Pascal computing language was created by Blaine Pascal in 1970. This computing language was considered a "High Level Language." This means that it had a code that read like english but could be converted into a code by the computer to understand the command. Niklaus Wirth finished developing the language.

RPG (1959)

RPG was created by IBM for business use. RPG stands for Report Program Generator.
