Use Enunciation for clarity

Enunciation- the pronunciation and articulation of the sounds of a word.

Pronunciation- the production of the sounds of a word.

Duration for Attention

Duration- how long something lasts.

  • Typically refers to how long a sentence last.
  • May also refer to different parts of a speech.
  • ex. the length of each section of your speech from shortest to longest is as follows: conclusion, introduction, and body. Think of a piece of pie.

Use Rhythm to Establish Tempo

Rhythm- the tempo of a speech.

Alliteration- the repetition of the initial sounds of words.

Adjust your Rate to Content, Audience, and Situation

Rate- the speed of delivery

  • American speakers speak at a rate between 125 and 190 words a minute.
  • Speaking rate needs to be adapted to the speaker, audience, situation, and content of the speech.

Use Pitch for Expression

Use Pause for Effect

Pitch- the highness or lowness of a speaker's voice, its upward and downward inflection, the melody produced by the voice.

Use Volume for Emphasis

Pause- A brief silence for effect

  • Two different types:
  • Silent
  • Vocalized
  • ex. "ahh," "umm," "you know," "so."

Volume- the relative loudness or softness of your voice.

Projection- adjusting your volume appropriately for the subject, the audience, and the situation.

Use Fluency for Fluidity

Fluency- the smoothness of delivery, the flow of the words, and the absence of vocalized pauses.
