Referring Students for Gifted Services Steps through the Process

Eligibility Meeting

When the guidance office, Mrs. Kowtko, sends the notice of the eligibility meeting, she will give an input form to the homeroom teacher and the parent. The input form needs to be returned the following day.

What to bring to the meeting:

Plan A student: teacher and parent - nothing.

Plan B student: Teacher and parent - items to be evaluated for student's portfolio. Items include completed projects, awards, or anything which accentuates their heightened ability.

Referring a student for gifted services

Parents, teachers, guidance counselors, principals, or students themselves can nominate a student for gifted referral through the guidance office, Mrs. Terrell.

A "Permission for Screening" letter is sent home for parents to consent to have their child observed by their teacher.

Definition of Gifted Learner

Children who give evidence of high achievement

capability in such areas as:

intellectual,

creative,

artistic,

leadership, or

academic fields - science

who need services, not ordinarily provided by schools, in order to help fully develop those capabilities.

Teacher of nominated student will complete a Rating Scale (Once called Gifted and Talented Checklist) and it's returned to Mrs. Terrell

Misconceptions about Gifted Students

Once referral documents are reviewed, student is evaluated by the school psychologist.
