What is it?

What purpose did it serve when it was first produced?

Device used to whip in Middle Ages

  • Birching is a type of corporal punishment
  • The delinquent is beaten with a bundle of birch twigs, and all together it is a birch rod.
  • Used in schools as a type of punishment
  • VERY painful, can draw blood
  • First recorded in the Antiquity Ages, and through the Middle Ages in Europe and Mediterranean areas.
  • This time period was from around the 8th centruy BC to the fall of the Roman Empire in 5th Century AD.
  • Corporal punishment
  • This could include criminal offenses
  • Done in public
  • School was the most common place of birching
  • Mostly in public schools
  • Misbehavior
  • Done on bare bottom
