GOAL!

Reflection

  • Volunteering at a nursing home and supporting an individual with disabilities proved to be beneficial and rewarding
  • Overall, it was a positive and successful experience, as I have achieved my social action plan goals to make a difference in the life of another individual
  • I have realized the significant need for social inclusion and therefore will be continuing my volunteer work following the conclusion of this culminating task

Volunteering at a Nursing Home

  • I learned that various obstacles can arise while supporting an individual, and therefore this strengthened my problem-solving skills
  • Remaining positive is imperative, as the attitude exhibited will reflect on others around you

What was learned through this experience

  • Each individual has their own specific needs therefore they should be supported to accommodate their individuality
  • Building a friendship can make a significant difference in the life of an individual living with a disability
  • I learned about the individual's specific disability from a medical perspective as well as a social perspective
  • I became better familiarized with the atmosphere of a nursing home and the residents utilizing its services

My Volunteering Experience

  • I volunteered at a nursing home supporting one individual
  • Some of the activities that we did included:

Giving the individual a makeover (Hair & makeup)

Doing a photo shoot

Making a photo collage of the photo shoot pictures

The individual presenting their crocheting projects

Baking and giving the individual cookies

Building a relationship through one-on-one communication

  • To assist in personal support needs

Assisting those who have developmental delays & disabilities

  • Individuals who have developmental delays or a disability often experience social exclusion
  • There are numerous stereotypes and stigmas that are associated with individuals who have a mental or physical disability
  • Developmental delays and disabilities can range drastically, making the support of each individual tailored to their specific needs.
