Presidency

1924-1944

  • He was the third president at FAMU
  • President during the Great Depression and World War II
  • Under the administration of John Robert Edward Lee, Sr the College acquired much of the physical and academic image it has today.
  • Buildings were erected; more land was purchased; more faculty were hired; courses were upgraded, and accreditation was received from several state agencies.
  • By 1944, FAMC had constructed 48 buildings, accumulated 396 acres of land, and had 812 students and 122 staff members.
  • His wife died in 1932
  • His son, J. R. E. Lee, Jr., helped his father obtain funds for Florida A&M's continued growth. During his tenure at Florida A&M Lee also served as an ex officio consultant to the Educational Policies Commission, a member of the National Educational Association, a member of the Florida State Advisory Committee for the National Youth Administration, and chairman of the State Negro Defense Saving Committee.

J.R.E. Lee Chapter

The late Mrs. L.G. Coleman, Mr. Sinclair Evans, Mr. Claude Hilliard and Mr. W.D. Sweet, in the spring of 1933, founded the J.R.E. Lee Chapter in the Jacksonville, FL.

Life After FAMU

John Robert Edward Lee Sr.

1924-1944

  • Lee had eleven grandchildren.
  • Lee died on April 6, 1944 from a case of pneumonia.
  • He died on FAMU campus.
  • He was buried at his request at Marshall, Texas.
  • During the 1950′s, FAMC President Dr. George W. Gore, Jr. realized the strength and importance of an alumni chapter in Jacksonville, FL. The Alumnus of Florida A&M College had grown to over 1000 in Duval County. Dr. Gore, in conjunction with the J.R.E. Lee Chapter, was instrumental in lobbying for the changing of the school’s status from FAMC (College) to that of FAMU (University) by 1957.
