Acids and bases.

Alkalies (bases) are

used less often but are

no less important.

Acids and bases are

used and consumed

in many different ways.

For example.

Lemons, orange juice and vinegar are examples of acids. Acids have a pH level of 1 to 6.

Bases have a slippery feeling, change litmus blue, and become less basic when mixed with acids.

Acids make traditional

batteries work; most

soft drinks are acidic,

especially fruit

juices.

They are used as cleaning agents from drain cleaner to shower scrub and even in toothpaste.

There is acids in our

toothpaste, bateries, soda and many other

different things thts we daily comsume.

Very few substances are

chemically neutral, most

of the chemicals you use

in every day life fall into

one of three categories:

acid, base, or solvent.

Acids are used to etch

microprocessor chips and

the printed circuit boards

found in every electronic

device.

We even have acid in our

stomach stomach

acid digests

our food, along

with enzymes.

Acids have a sour taste, are corrosive to metals, change litmus (a dye extracted from lichens) red, and become less acidic when mixed with bases.

They are a key component of

"buffered" over-the-counter

medications designed to

cause less stomachache.
