Pickle Dissection:Pepito's Case

Purpose

To practice proper dissection vocabulary and procedures.

Safety Notes: Goggles must be worn during the entire investigation. Use care with scalpel and pins. Clean equipment and work area completely when finished.

6.Oberservations

Procedure

That Pepito was a healthy pickle. As we probed and extracted the seeds from the interior with the forceps, we noticed that the seeds closer to the posterior-bottom end were underdeveloped and had more flesh attached to them as they were removed, while the seeds toward the anterior/top were more developed we came to the conclusion that more nutrients reached the anterior side causing it to thicken while the posterior side with the underdeveloped seeds stayed thinner. When probing the pickle, juices from the pickle began to accumulate on the interior and then spill out of the pickle. The seeds were yellow and translucent due to the vinegar and juices the pickle was soaked in, making them more vulnerable to the scalpel, causing several of the 75 seeds extracted to be lacerated.

3.Use the scalpel to open the ventral "body cavity" by making a deep-I shaped incision, and unfold the pickle to expose the "Internal Organs"

4.Use the pins to hold down Pepito's flaps to the tray

5. Sketch Pepito's interior

1. Place the pickle on the dissecting tray and pin it to the tray on the anterior and posterior end.

2.Examine the Exterior of the Pickle.

Pepito was smooth all around, and had a laceration on the anterior/front side, toward the posterior/bottom. Was thicker on the anterior and got narrow toward the posterior.

Thank You!

Questions?

1. Label following arts of the pickle: Anterior, Posterior, Dorsal, Ventral, Lateral.

2.Does the pickle have a bilateral or radial symmetry? Radial symmetry

3.List 2 safety precautions to take during dissections. To always gloves to avoid skin irritation from the juices or fluids the organism contains.

Goggles must be worn the whole time to avoid liquids from entering the eyes to prevent injury.
