Learning Approaches, Theory, and Practice

Gardner also believed that educators should present learning materials to students in different ways in order to meet their needs (Zaur, 2014).

According to, our ECE 101 theorist gallery tour, Jean Piaget is considered a constructivist that believes that children go through different stages of cognitive development (Zaur, 2014).

Sectioning a classroom into specific interest areas is important in the Creative Curriculum approach (Zaur, 2014).

Center-based classroom environment equipped with child-sized furniture, work space, and open shelving accessible to learners for extended periods at least twice daily (Estes, 2012).

Howard Gardner a professor of Education at Harvard University developed the theory of multiple intelligence. " Theses intelligences relate to a person's unique aptitude set of capabilities and ways they might prefer to demonstrate intellectual abilities" (Northern Illinois University, n.d).

In conclusion, understanding Gardner and Piaget theories along with approaches such as Creative Curriculum and High/Scope is vital and beneficial when educating children. When applying Gardner theory, teacher must comprehend that all children have distinctive intellectual abilities. Which, demands that as teachers we be more creative in designing an environment that meets the needs of every child. In creative curriculum, the learning environment is a "center-based classroom environment equipped with child-sized furniture, work space, and open shelving accessible to learners throughout the day; space for large-group participation" (Estes,2012). And, in High/Scope, the learning environment is pretty much the same. Ranking both theories and approaches the top two on my list.

Being that, High/Scope instructional orientation consist of the balance of learner-directed and teacher-directed activities, directly links this approach to Piaget constructivist. As far as, Gardner theory is concerned, I believe its his theory that began to bring a change in the set up of classrooms. Teacher's are now modifying their classrooms to accommodate the nine intelligences, creating different areas to for different activities.
