Daulatpur-Saturia Tornado

by Chloë Posner, Kimon Monokandilos, and Treat B. Schubert

How People Should Prepare in the Future:

"Preparation"

Before a storm:

Countries that Helped

"Relief and Assist"

-consider making a safe room in your home

-pack an emergency kit

-watch out for signs that a tornado is coming to your area

During a storm:

-act quickly after a tornado warning

-if you are in a public area, go to a designated shelter area

-if you are at home, go to a basement or to the first floor

- if you are in the open, lie down and cover your head with your hands (find a ditch if possible)

USA, China, India, and the Netherlands provided

  • money
  • food
  • water for survivors

and helped in general with the damage

These countries had/have close relations with Bangladesh

Bangladesh-->very poor- little help to relief effort

'The Bubble'

Devastation

Due to the the Daulatpur-Saturia Tornado:

Contribution to the Knowledge Of Society

  • strong/fast winds
  • could exceed 220 mph(138 kmh)
  • loud thunderstorm
  • dark skies/clouds
  • heavy precipitation

  • trees being ripped off the ground
  • houses being demolished
  • big black cone on the move
  • central vortex (about 100 meters in diameter)

Most importantly, people learned how to prepare for tornadoes!

<--- not the actual tornado

there are no images of it

Bangladesh=too poor

If a tornado like this were to happen again

  • people would know what necessary precautions they would need to take
  • what to do
  • what materials are needed
  • started in the city of Daulatpur and ended in Saturia
  • the tornado was one mile wide (1.6 km.)
  • path of about 50 miles (80.5 km.) long
  • extensive damage- costing about 1.5 million U.S. dollars
  • every house within a 6 square km. area was completely destroyed

Scientific Explanation

How the tornado develops:

Properties of the tornado-

  • fast moving winds
  • forming a spinning tube
  • air begins to lift a section into a vertical position
  • the stronger vortex --> center
  • the other vortex 'dies'
  • supercell-->the stronger winds tilt the rotating updraft, which is called a mesocyclone
  • the tornado keeps growing

Questions to Further Consider

  • Daulatpur-Saturia Tornado
  • occurred on April 26, 1989
  • in the Dhaka region of Bangladesh
  • lasted about 1-1.5 hours
  • Fujita scale rating is unknown

HI MY NAME IS CARL :)

Damage

Technology

Comparing this to the total Population of Bangladesh in 1989-> 104.8 million

  • Killed- 1,200
  • Injured- 12,000
  • Made 80,000 Homeless

1) Why don't other countries aid Bangladesh in preparing for tornado season?

2) If there was enough data, how would this tornado be rated on the Fujita scale?

3) What else is the MPAR (multi-function phased array radar) used for other than predicting tornadoes?

-Doppler radar devices are mounted on the outside of vehicles

-These devices are used to predict tornadoes

-Another device used to predict tornadoes is called the multi-function phased array radar (also called the MPAR)

No noticeable change in landscape
