Teaching Resources

Tinkercad's Lessons Page

  • Pros:
  • Very good for learning how to design in Tinkercad.
  • A multitude of "plug-and-chug" activities.
  • Cons:
  • Not much in the way of content-specific material.
  • Can be difficult to sort through.
  • Not aligned to specific tools, more project driven.

Split your screen so that you can look at the dimensions table while completing the ruler workout.

Explore Tinkercad's Lessons & Projects

**Pedagogical Practice:

  • Go to the "Learn" page with Tinkercad's website
  • Identify 1 lesson or project that you might use with your students.
  • Try some (or all!) of the lesson.
  • We'll share our findings in 15 min.

Find a Content-Specific Lesson or Project

Scaling in Tinkercad (Dilation)

http://www.thingiverse.com/education

https://u.tinkerine.com/

  • Traverse the web in search of a lesson or project that might support your curriculum.
  • Solid starting points:
  • Thingiverse Education
  • Tinkerine U
  • SPO Learning Lab
  • Pinshape Blog
  • Instructables

Recommendation: work with a partner, ideally someone in your content area.

We'll share in 30 minutes!

Welcome to Tinkercad in the Classroom Session 2!

Activity Shareout

https://www.instructables.com/

Content Specific Project:

Angles of Elevation (Geometry/ Algebra 2)

1. Did you learn any useful tricks or strategies that you might be able to apply in other contexts?

  • Found model airplanes, helicopters, and submarines on Thingiverse.
  • Students will be given an angle and a distance and will then place the planes in the correct location.

Two Ways

1. Selection Handles

2. How did the Driver & Navigator protocol go for you? What was good about it? What might you change?

2. Ruler Tool

3. Any tweaks that you might make to the activity?

Tonight's Agenda:

Summary/Share Out

What did you find?

The Ruler Tool!

1. Share out!

2. Practice: Scaling & Moving Objects

  • Demo: Nudging & the Ruler
  • Exercise: Ruler Workout!

3. Sample assessment & Repeat it Race

4. Online Resources

5. Research/Find a lesson online.

6. Brainstorm a lesson with a partner/partners.

Did you explore Tinkercad or put it to use over these past few weeks? Anything fun/cool to report?

Lesson Design Brainstorm

For next time (pick one of the following):

  • Find or brainstorm an idea for a content-specific lesson or project that you might like to use in your classroom.
  • Find and complete a online Tinkercad tutorial.
  • Model something!

Moving Objects (Translation)

We'd like to have lessons ideas to work on in Session 3.

Take the next 15 minutes:

  • You're welcome to choose a person in your content area to work with.
  • Brainstorm lesson ideas - either specific to your content or Tinkercad training - that you would like to research and develop for Session 3.

Three Ways

1. Click and Drag

2. Ruler Tool! Again!

3. Nudge

Session 3

For next time:

  • We'll explore the workplane, duplicate, and align tools.
  • Continue working on our lessons.
  • Special guest! Liz Arum, Ultimaker's education specialist.
  • Perhaps a special conference call with Autodesk!

Examples of Teaching Materials

Do Now: 3 minutes

Do Now: (3 min)

Do Now: Answer the following in your notes.

Identify all primitives that were used to create the fighter jet. Be sure to label them on the images. Then answer: How does this process help you become a better modeler?

Align & the Workplane Tool

Look closely and discuss with your tablemate. Can you be sure that the letters were placed correctly on this name tag? Why or why not?

Consider the tools and techniques we've learned in Tinkercad. Write step-by-step instructions explaining how you would put the roof on the house. Then trade instructions with your tablemate, read and compare.

1. What is the difference between duplicate and copy and paste? When might one be more useful than the other?

2. What are the steps for grouping two or more objects?

3. What is the value of grouping? In other words, what does grouping allow us to do?

Are their instructions the same as yours?

Due by the end of our next class (this will take ALL of both periods):

  • Let's Learn Tinkercad Lesson 5: Using the Align Tool and the Workplane helper

To complete:

1. Go to classroom.google.com

2. Open "03.10 Tinkercad Workplane & Align Tool",

3. Follow all instructions and answer all questions within.

Basic Laptop Rules:

1. No headphones - except when watching assigned videos.

2. Only use the laptop assigned to you.

3. Carry the laptop by the base (not the screen).

4. On task - off task behavior results in a 0 for today's participation grade.

The Workplane and Align Tools

What tools/techniques can we use to be sure that objects are placed where we really want them to be?

Driver & Navigator!

You are completing the work on the computer. And you are required to take turns with your partner. One of you will “drive” while the other “navigates”.

  • The Navigator (aka. the brain): The navigator provides all instructions for the driver (ie. directs, reads, and answers)
  • The Driver (aka. the muscle): The driver follows the navigator's instructions.
