TKAM Chapter 16

Coming of Age

At the beginning of the chapter, Scout climbs into Jem's bed crying. The real meaning of the night's events impressed themselves upon her, and she was terrified. This is part of the process of Scout growing up and losing her childish innocence.

Compassion

Entertainment Culture

In the morning, Atticus explains the events of the previous night to Scout and Jem. He tells them that the reason Mr. Cunningham left is that Scout made him stand in Atticus's shoes for a minute.

The trial is public, and treated like an entertainment event. It seems like people see Tom Robinson as something to be watched for fun, not a person whose life is in danger. This is expressed when Miss Maudie tells Dill that she is not going to watch the trial, because "It's like a Roman Carnival."

Compassion

This reinforces the theme of compassion prevalent throughout the book and hearkens back to Atticus's dictum to Scout earlier in the book to "Put on someone else's shoes and walk around in them."
