How common is Meth Used?

How addictive is Meth?

- It depends on the way it is used. Injecting/Smoking vs. Ingesting/Snorting

- While addiction can set in quickly, it is not the same thing as merely liking a drug. Addiction entails continuous, compulsive use in spite of evidence that doing so has or will be harmful. How quickly an individual becomes addicted depends on:

  • The method of ingestion.
  • Genetic influences.
  • Environmental influences.
  • The existence of any co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Other interpersonal, social, and psychological factors.

Long Term:

- Increased blood pressure and heart rate.

- Damaged blood vessels in the brain which can lead to a stroke or loss of memory.

- An irregular heart beat which can lead to many issues and even death.

- Liver, Lung, and kidney damage

-Meth can lead to death.

Drug Abuse Assignment

What are the effects of Meth?

Short Term:

- false sense of well being and energy, people will end up pushing their body past its limits.

- severe "crash" or physical and mental breakdowns

- less feelings of hunger, extreme weight loss, less sleep, nausea, increased aggressiveness and irritability.

- hallucinations, anxiety and paranoia. Convulsions may happen which can lead to death.

How is it Taken/Used?

-Methamphetamine comes in several forms and can be smoked, inhaled (snorted), injected, or orally ingested. The preferred method of abusing the drug varies by geographical region and has changed over time.

-Smoking or injecting methamphetamine puts the drug very quickly into the bloodstream and brain, causing an immediate, intense “rush” and amplifying the drug’s addiction potential and adverse health consequences. The rush, or “flash,” lasts only a few minutes and is described as extremely pleasurable. Snorting or oral ingestion produces euphoria—a high, but not an intense rush
